The Colony's Tennis Professionals - Meet the Pros
The Colony Beach & Tennis Resort, ranked the number one Tennis Resort in the Nation for eight consecutive years (1996 – 2004), has reopened its renowned tennis center after a brief interruption in service.
Newly appointed co-directors Sais Maharaj and Claudiu Retean have developed a daily schedule of tennis clinics and offer private and semi-private lessons Monday through Saturday.
Sais Maharaj has more than 30 years of teaching experience with his most recent five years spent as a member of the legendary team of Colony pros. His playing career includes a No. 1 ranking as a junior in Trinidad and Tobago. He was a member of the Carson-Newman College tennis team and competed on the pro circuit. Sais describes his style of teaching as "a great fun-filled work out, while improving your stroke production" and has a wide range of experience in training, counseling, conditioning, and the use of video techniques. Sais says "I really enjoy passing on my knowledge of the game, meeting people and being outdoors." Often requested by returning resort guests, Sais is well established in team and league tennis conditioning and training, and excels in cultivating and developing competitive players.
Claudiu Retean started his career as a nationally ranked player for his home country of Romania and has been teaching for the last nine years. His specialty has been training college and junior players and accompanying them on tour. Claudiu’s expertise in USTA group training has also been substantial. Claudiu believes that virtually anyone can find success with solid and personalized coaching and his greatest pleasure lies in “teaching my clients to love the game, experience growth and reach new personal playing heights while having fun at the same time.” He believes that tennis is a game for life in that you can enjoy it at any age. By working with each individual on their own unique strengths and behaviors and focusing on making each student the best they can be by celebrating even the smallest achievement, he allows his students to surpass levels they previously had difficulty attaining.
